Reclaiming Your Life After Religious Trauma & High-Control Experiences
Specialized support for deconstruction of faith, exiting from high-control groups, spiritual crisis, and survivors of spiritual abuse in Tacoma, the surrounding Puget Sound Corridor, and across Washington State.
“Was I wrong to leave? Did I waste my life? How do I trust myself or anyone again?”
If you’re reading this, you may be feeling a profound sense of disorientation, grief, separation, or even anger as the beliefs that once defined your entire world continue to crumble.
For many survivors of religious trauma in Washington State—from the Puget Sound corridor to rural communities—the aftermath of high-control environments creates a unique form of psychological injury.
Whether you are navigating a new layers of deconstruction of faith, leaving a fundamentalist Christian sect, an LDS community, a New Age "yoga cult," or escaping conversion therapy within LGBTQIA+ spaces, your experience is valid, and your recovery is possible.
At Jupiter Pines Counseling, we do not offer platitudes. We offer a compassionate, autonomy-focused approach to healing from spiritual abuse, purity culture, and the long-term scars of indoctrination.
Who Is This For?
Jupiter Pines Counseling offers tailored treatment and support for those who have endured:
-
The painful but necessary process of questioning, dismantling, and rebuilding your belief system after realizing it was manipulative or harmful.
-
Leaving communities (religious, political, financial, or cultic) that demanded absolute obedience, monitored your digital life, and isolated you from outside support.
-
Healing from the deep-seated trauma of being taught that your body, sexuality, or desires are inherently "dirty" or dangerous. This includes recovery from conversion therapy practices within both religious and LGBTQIA+ communities where "cures" were forced upon you.
-
For women specifically who spent decades learning to obey, suppress their needs, and prioritize the community over themselves, often at the cost of their own identity. We help you relearn how to exist as a sovereign individual without guilt.
-
Navigating the specific cultural pressures of high-demand religious groups where dissent is punished and conformity is rewarded.
-
Recovering from "spiritual bypassing" or cult-like dynamics within meditation, yoga, or wellness circles that used spiritual language to justify control.
Privacy & Discretion
For clients leaving high-control groups, families, religious communities, or relationships where other members may be monitoring communications:
We offer “Discreet Billing” options. We only accept private-pay, which means we do not bill insurance. If you are concerned about insurance Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) being sent to a policyholder, we can discuss out-of-pocket reimbursements that generate minimal digital footprints.
We will never share your contact information without your specific, written permission.
We are trained in "low-profile" protocols to ensure you are never identified by name if you prefer anonymity.
The Hidden Cost of Spiritual Trauma, Beyond Emotional Pain
Survivors of religious trauma often face a complex web of long-term harm that extends far beyond emotional distress. We recognize and treat the full spectrum of damage inflicted by these environments:
-
The crushing loss of your worldview, community, and sense of cosmic meaning.
-
Many survivors left careers, education, or financial opportunities to serve their communities, only to find themselves unprepared for the secular workforce upon exit. We support re-entry and vocational rebuilding.
-
The physiological toll of chronic stress, hypervigilance, and the somatic effects of living in a state of "fight or flight" for years.
-
Relearning physical pleasure and how to have healthy sexual intimacy after being taught that sex is either forbidden or solely for procreation.
-
For those whose trauma intersects with human trafficking or labor trafficking within a religious context, we provide specialized support to understand the power dynamics at play (though we maintain a separate page for direct trafficking recovery resources).
Healing in the Pacific Northwest
Religious trauma can happen anywhere, however the culture of the Washington State and Puget Sound region presents unique challenges and opportunities for survivors.
There is a specific social and spiritual pressure within our beloved "Seattle Bubble." Spiritual seeking is often commodified, or conversely, fundamentalist isolation can be a hidden reality beneath the surface of secular progressivism.
Whether you are in Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma, Olympia, or surrounding towns, we provide a space that honors your specific journey from faith-based control to secular freedom.

Our Approach
Space to Build Your AutonomyThe concept of "safety" has often been weaponized by abusers to demand compliance ("It's safe here because you must obey," or "The outside world is unsafe"). It is for this reason that we do not promise "safety;" we offer space for your autonomy.
Recovery from high-control experiences is not about finding a therapist who promises to keep you safe from all pain.
True recovery is learning to practice exploring the world, yourself, and defining your own sense of safety.
This Work Includes:Building Internal Agency: We help you develop the skills to identify boundaries, ask for what you need, and enforce them.
Reclaiming Autonomy: You are the expert on your own life. Our role is not to tell you what to believe or how to live, but to provide a mirror that reflects your strength back to you so you can make your own choices.
Digital Security & Confidentiality: We understand that for many exiters, their digital footprint is a source of fear. We prioritize maximum confidentiality and discuss digital security protocols with you during our intake to ensure your search history, location data, and communications remain yours alone.
About Your Therapist
Rooted in Clinical Expertise, Guided by Lived ExperienceMy practice is built on a foundation of rigorous academic training and specialized certifications in trauma-informed care, with a specific focus on religious trauma, high-control groups, and faith deconstruction. I bring advanced clinical tools from modalities like Narrative Therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to help navigate the complex layers of grief, guilt, and identity reconstruction that often accompany leaving these environments.
My clinical approach is equally shaped by my own journey through deconstruction. Having navigated the difficult terrain of questioning deeply held beliefs and rebuilding a life outside of rigid dogma, I understand the unique isolation and fear that clients often feel when their spiritual world shifts. This lived experience allows me to offer not just clinical insight, but a profound sense of being "seen" without judgment or pressure to return to the status quo.
In my work with you, I prioritize creating a nonjudgmental, collaborative space where your pace is honored and your questions are treated as valid data points rather than threats. Whether we are processing deep-seated trauma or simply exploring who you are outside of old expectations, my goal is to walk beside you as a grounded ally in reclaiming your narrative.
Next Steps: Reclaiming Your Sovereignty
Recovery from religious trauma is not linear, and it doesn’t require you to abandon your spirituality entirely if that is what you choose. It simply requires that the choice be yours.
